PASSIONATE RATIONS

I have an oversized mug with a New Yorker cartoon on it. It depicts three fish, from smallest to largest.

The small fish looks very depressed, its mouth a close-lipped frown. “There is no justice in the world,” it laments.

The medium fish has its mouth open to make a tasty morsel of the small fish. “There is some justice in the world,” it asserts.

The largest fish has its jaws wide open to swallow the medium fish (and, one presumes, the small one). “The world is just,” it proclaims.

Yep. That about says it all.
