Bunnies, Cats and other Garden Gremlins
This is a test. This is only a test.
If this was a real attempt to grow one’s own food, you would be hearing from people who actually know what they’re doing.
Instead, you’re stuck with me.
Through some odd twist in the fabric of the universe, my spouse took it upon himself to build a raised planting bed in our front yard a couple of weeks ago. We bought a compost/loam mix from a local purveyor, and mixed that again with peat moss, and filled the box, which then looked like an elongated sandbox. My four-year-old neighbor commented that it would be good for the neighborhood cats (God, I hope not).
We bought some seeds, and some already-growing tomato stalks. I apologized to the stalks as I planted them. So far, they seem to still be alive, though I have a sneaking suspicion that it’s still a bit early to have tomatoes in the bed.
Last night my spouse “started” our other seeds (Japanese cucumbers, daikon radishes, sweet peas, and a mesclun mix, among others, in little bitty cups of soil in the house). This can’t possibly work, but I guess I’ll support his efforts.
And then there’s the bunny that frequents the corner of our yard, waiting patiently with eager teeth.
Yep, this is going to be interesting. I wonder if we’ll pass the test?

How is the garden going with all the rain you had?

Thankfully, Wednesday’s crazy weather did not uproot my tomato plants. However, the flowering buds (i.e. where the tomatoes presumably will grow) seem to have gone missing, which has me concerned. Still waiting for sprouts from the beans and cukes I planted last weekend. We have itty bitty basil plants sprouting in the house. Turns out that’s all M tried sprouting indoors (not the other seeds). The radishes are waiting for later in season. May plant lettuce this weekend.
