Bakery of Dreams
A vacant 107-year-old building stands forlornly across from a Catholic church. Formerly a bakery, dough no longer rises near the heat of its still intact but now cold ovens. The large windows of an empty storefront bespeak life’s simple commerce. Three stories high, it boasts living quarters on the second floor and the wonders of a full attic above all. Ah, the life this building once held!
The “For Sale” sign beckons to me, drawing me away from my usual path. The building has been for sale for months now. I drive by slowly, gazing again at its potential. I would leave the storefront facade. Maybe add a little contrasting paint to the trim on the upper windows. Add decorative fencing. The possibilities swell to fill my mind like rising dough, rife with possibility and flavor.
This is what I have been looking for. Living architecture. History. Life. Food. All coming together in the countenance of this house.
It is the story of my life that I have found it in a bear market, which likely will chase my dreams away.
But it won’t hurt to look…will it?
