Sprinkle Me This

Sprinkles FallWould You Like A Donut with Those Sprinkles?

I realized just this morning that, if dessert merchants want me to buy their wares, all they have to do is add rainbow sprinkles.

Something about the bright, happy colors draws me right in.   I’m a sucker for this sort of décor.   Just one look at the inside of my house—where I have besprinkled the walls with currant reds, pear greens, bumble bee yellows, soft chinchilla blues, and wild orchid purples–belies this truth.

This predilection has to come from childhood conditioning, where bright colors meant joyful sugar rushes.  It certainly can’t come from a more sophisticated palate, which would certainly eschew the sugary plasticity of the pellets proffered by most establishments.

Palate or no, I think I am doomed to a lifetime of reaching for the cupcake with the most riotous assortment of colors scattered atop its buttercream crest.

Ah well, there are worse fates….

Once I made a carrot cake with creme cheese frosting and rainbow sprinkles on top. Nothing wrong with that. The next day the cake didn´t look nice. Nothing wrong with the taste, but the sprinkles had made the cream cheese topping look unattractive.
